Balloon Buggies

Take a look at our Balloon buggies. We had great fun making them. We then designed experiments thinking very carefully about the forces that act upon the buggies. What could we change to make the buggy move further? We made predictions and then carried out fair tests. In our groups we collated and recorded results and then used our scientific knowledge to explain our findings.

History Trip

This morning Year 6 visited Hainault High History department where they were given name tags and sent to either Liverpool or Yorkshire. With sound effects and video footage they were given a taste of what evacuees' experienced during WWII. They also made gas mask cases and sent postcards home to their families. The children have come away with a greater understanding of what children experienced during this period.

Anti-Bullying Drama

We've had a great morning. Year 6 visitied Hainault High and took part in a drama session based around our theme of Anti-bullying. We were split into four groups of seven to prepare and perform a series of freeze frames. Everyone loved it, the studio was amazing and we all joined in.

Hello All,
Today, year 6 visited Hainault Forest High School for a Team Sports Day. We got the chance to use the main sports hall and be taught by Hainault High PE teachers. We took part in a variety of team building games and worked together in groups to achieve our goals. We had an excellent day and are looking forward to going back to Hainault Forest High very soon!

Year 6 Boys pass Redridge Football District Trials!

Congratulations to Tyler Faubel and Dylan Eivers who have both been selected to represent the borough of Redbridge in Year 6 school football!

The boys attended the first trials on Thursday the 8th of september and passed the first trials, both being selected from a group of 50 trialists! The boys then attended the week after and we're selected from the remaining 30 trialists to represent the District in football!

Both Tyler and Dylan begin training this friday, before they have their first match this Saturday against the London Borough of Newham. Well done boys.

A big welcome to our new Year 6 children. What an exciting time for you all. Year 6 is full of amazing opportunities which we are sure you will enjoy and learn so much from. As the eldest children in the school you will be role models to the younger children. This is an important responsibility and one which we know you will take very seriously.

We begin the term with our 'Ready to Learn' topic which explores the different ways in which we learn and what helps us to learn effectively.

Important update re: Wat Tyler Residential

As you know the Y6 residential this year, to Wat Tyler Country Park, was offered to both classes as 2 separate visits. We hoped that as many children as possible would come and that we would be able to fill all the places offered. However, we sadly find now, that only half the anticipated uptake for places has happened.

Having received the figures and potential unacceptable increase in cost to each child, we have no choice but to combine both class trips into one. The date for the now one residential visit to Wat Tyler Country Park is Monday 20th June 2011-Wednesday 22nd June 2011.

Every experience and planned activity will remain exactly the same as well as hopefully, the enjoyment and fun factor!

Welcome back to what will be Year 6's last term at John Bramston Primary. Although this is a sad thought we have much to be excited about! Many exciting events and activities to look forward to.

After the excitement of Heritage week we begin with our 'Through the Decades' topic. This includes learning about famous people, significant events, fashion and work connected to the decades which followed World War 2.

Year 6 hosted a Healthy Living lunch today. Our special guests were teachers from Hainault High. They included the Head Teacher and Sports specialists. We presented the work we have done during this topic and we explained what we have learnt. It was also a way of saying thank you to Hainault High for allowing us to come to their school and take part in a variety of activities which we thoroughly enjoyed and learnt a lot from.

The Year 6 Garden

We are very luck in Year 6 to have a garden area. Juste, Bailey, Mustafa and Rivaldas discussed what they like about our garden and how it helps us in many different aspects of our learning. We are looking forward to using it more as the weather becomes warmer.

Junior Citizens Project

On Monday 7th March our Year 6 children had the exciting opportunity to attend the Junior Citizens Project at Hargreaves Camp Site. The scheme was run by the Metropolitan police and was designed to make the children more aware of safety issues such as robbery, drug paraphernalia, road safety and fire safety. The children took part in a number of activities led by police, firemen, transport workers and other key workers in our community. These activities taught them a lot about being safe when carrying out every day activities.

We are Moving and Grooving for our next topic in Year 6. It will include a range of physical activities and science investigations. Next week we will be visiting Hainault High to experience a variety of sports. It's all very exciting!

Gamelan Music

On Monday we went to the music centre to play a selection of instruments from Java, an island in Indonesia.This linked nicely to our are topic 'Kensuke's Kingdom' which is based on an island in the South Pacific. In our groups we played a variety of percussion instruments which were very different to the percussion instruments we are used to. Mr Ball, the music teacher, helped us to perform a piece of music which sounded amazing!

Year 6 will be visiting the Hainault Creative Writer's Group, which is run at Hainault Community Centre. The children will have the opportunity to find out information about World War 2 - listening to personal accounts of real life evacuees. Reach for the Sky

We have been learning about the amazing mountain ranges in our world. We are using a range of media to prepare and present key information. The mountain ranges we have researched include the Himalayas, Rockies, Andes and Alps. We have also been learning about the composer Wagner who composed 'Ride of the Valkyries'- a famous piece of music based on an epic journey up a mountain! We are now having great fun composing our own pieces of music based on different mountains.

Material Mania at Hainault High

We visited Hainault High science department today and took part in a variety of science experiments. Our current topic in Year 6 is materials, so it was great to have the opportunity to use the bunsen burners to find out what happens to certain materials when they are heated. Watching magnesium burn was quite spectacular!

Today 15 members of our class visited Hainault Underground Station. It was a fascinating trip, there was so much to learn. We never realised how interesting an underground station could be. We even got the opportunity to drive a train simulator!

Year 6 will be walking to Hainault Underground Station to learn about the operations and management - on the following dates:
Monday 13th September 2010 (15 children from 6C)
Monday 20th September 2010 (15 children from 6C)
Monday 27th September 2010 (15 children from 6O/L)
Monday 4th October 2010 (15 children from 6O/L)

They will be leaving the school at 09:30 and returning about 2:30 PM - so will need to bring a packed lunch. Families will be sent a text -to indicate which date your child will need a packed lunch.

Who needs Wimbledon to enjoy Strawberries and Cream? Y6 invited their families to enjoy an afternoon on picnic rugs/blankets, eating this delicious treat and sipping cool punch. It was great to see families interacting, chatting and enjoying each other's company. Thank you to the staff and pupils that worked hard to make this event a success.

Our last half term!

Wow, can you believe this is the last half term for our Year 6 children. We have some exciting events and activities over the next six weeks.

This week is Art Week. The children will be taking part in a variety of activities including salsa dancing and singing. We also have an artist coming in to work with YOK.

Our play rehearsals are well under way. We are having so much fun singing, dancing and acting. It's really important that those children learn their lines so please, please keep practising them at home.

A group of Year six children are going to Wat Tyler next week. Please read the letters carefully ensuring you know the time of departure and what clothes and equipment the children need.

Welcome back Year 6. We hope you enjoyed the the break and are ready for your final term in John Bramston. We are going to be very busy in Year 6. We have so much planned - so much fun to be had!

We are looking forward to see our finished shelter that we have been working on outside our classroom. It will be a great place to work and relax during the summer.

Sailing and canoeing begins next week at Fairlop Waters. Don't forget to bring suitable clothing and footwear. Be prepared to get a little wet!

Our new topic is about Post War Britain. We will be learning how people lived and the way things changed during the five decades after the second world War.

Art and Design Project

Over the last half term we have been working with a visiting artist to design and make a sculpture. Below Leah and Hannan explain the design that has been chosen by the children in John Bramston. After Easter Year6 will continue to plan and build this design.

We have named our model ‘Sunny Den’. It is a shelter with a hammock inside. It’s a great place to read and have a chat. Our design is unique because for the top of our den, we have used a weaved effect with blue and white cloth representing the sky.

We used different materials to produce our model like:
• Strips of Wood
• String
• Jeans(for the Hammock)
• Different types of cloth
• Sticky Tape

Our model has been chosen to build in the Y6 garden. We have been working in separate groups to plan some ideas. Y6 is very excited about building this project.

Junior Citezenship

On Monday 1st March Y6OK attended a Junior Citizenship trip which gave the children the opportunity to think and learn about ways of keeping safe. The children were split into teams and presented with a variety of scenarios which included considering the potential risks of crossing the road, using the underground, talking to strangers and mis-use of the internet. They had to work together thinking very carefully about what action to take in order to make the right decision.

Hope you have all had an enjoyable break and are ready for for a busy and eventful second half to our Spring term. It is amazing to think that you are half way through Year 6 - how quickly time has passed!

We begin with our 'Healthy Living' topic. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn how we can help ourselves and each other to lead healthy and happy lives. The great thing about staying healthy is that you can have great fun doing it. Our topic work will include making delicious healthy food and participating in fun exercise activities. Can't wait!

Last Wednesday, during our assembly, we presented some of the excellent work we have done this term. Well done to all the children in Y6OK who put on an excellent display of a variety of work. This included a gymnastics balance routine, a musical performance and demonstration of the multiplication grid method.

Celebrating Diwali

We had a wonderful assembly today. It was all about Diwali; the festival of lights celebrated by Sikhs and Hindus. Some children in Y6OK shared their experieces of Diwali with the whole school. Amogh, Malaviga and Vanathy wore their special clothes and explained how they celebrate Diwali with their families.

Making Cakes

As part of our science topic 'materials', we spent yesterday afternoon making cakes! We learned that besides changing between solid,liquid and gas,there are other changes that can happen to materials. Sometimes,once a change has happened, it can't be changed back.
Cake isn't just a mixture of ingredients. Cooking changes the molecules to make a new material.

Team Building

To kick start our very first creative curriculum theme in Year 6 - 'New Beginnings', we took part in a team building exercise called the 'Tyre Game'. We were very fortunate to have two very experienced visitors come into school this morning and facilitate the activity. The 'Tyre Game' is used to teach participants how to work as a team. We had to imagine that the course marked out represented an acid swamp. Using tyres, we had to cross the swamp without touching the acid. It was harder than it looked, especially when the crocodiles arrived! We had to really co-operate and listen to each other. All three teams made it across eventually. We were hot and bothered but we really did enjoy taking part.

BOOK WEEK

Last week people all around the world celebrated world book week.
Here at JB we had an excellent week and had lots of fun activities going on. As you may know, on Thursday the whole school dressed up as book characters and we can say they looked fabulous. We could tell a lot of effort and hard work went into making the costumes. Also, classes had an opportunity to listen to some excellent and funny story tellers. Every class took a book as their week theme and did something about it. Y6G had great fun being able to plan their own lessons on the book Kensuke’s Kingdom. Some children chose to do a map of the island; some wrote book reviews etc etc .Even the nursery children had fun learning about Elmer books and African elephants. We know that children around the school had a fabulous week. We hope you did. We know we did!!!!!!!!!

STACKING CUPS!!

A new craze has hit the school - STACKING CUPS!!
Using the specially designed sets of cups, the children have an invigorating 10 minute fun activity, learning how to up-stack and down-stack the cups. This activity improves concentration, co-ordination and agility of thought.

Thanks to all the children in Y6G for making the build up to Christmas so much fun. Excellent co-operation skills ensured that the 'Decorate the Class' competition was a great success. The Christmas party revealed some very good dancing skills, and the children showed great maturity when assisting the Reception and Y1 children during the church visit.
